At long last the Government is doing something about harmful gambling, too little and long overdue though it is. Most welcome is the introduction of a statutory levy on the gambling industry to fund treatment, prevention, and research. A significant gap is the failure to curb gambling advertising. Government is missing a trick here, since the now huge amount of gambling advertising is unpopular with all sectors of the population. Most importantly, Government is still failing to adopt a public health approach to gambling. While the promotion of gambling requires the use of methods that encourage habit formation, the emphasis is still on the responsibility of the individual gambler to limit gambling-related harm. Government is still failing in its responsibility to keep us, especially young adults, safe from gambling harm.
