On 17 March the Lords voted against an amendment to the Football Governance Bill which would have placed a duty on the proposed new Independent Football Regulator to gradually eliminate altogether gambling-related sponsorship and advertising, something that many of us in the public health field, including Peers for Gambling Reform (PGR) have been arguing for. The amendment was put forward by Liberal Democrat peer Lord Addington but opposed by, among others, the Minister responsible for gambling, Baroness Twycross, who argued that enough was already been done to ensure gambling ads were ‘proportionate and appropriate,’ that clubs, especially smaller ones, would be hampered financially by a ban, and that the new regulator should not be ‘politicised.’
